Richard Duszak, MD, is Professor and Vice Chair for Health Policy and Practice in the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences at Emory University as well as the Founding Chief Executive Officer and Affiliate Senior Research Fellow at the Harvey L. Neiman Health Policy Institute. He recently authored "An Empirical Framework for Breast Screening Bundled Payments," which proposed the first ever bundled payment model for radiology, specifically for screening mammography. Dr. Duszak was senior author on the paper, which was published in Journal of the American College of Radiology (JACR).
The Harvey L. Neiman Health Policy Institute published a press release regarding the publication, discussing the importance of the study findings in relation to bundled payment models. A quote from the publication illustrates the impact the findings could have on healthcare: "Because screening bundles include costs for follow-up diagnostic imaging in addition to the initial screening mammographic examination, patient adherence to screening guidelines may improve, which may have profound effects on public health" (Hughes, Danny R. et al., 2016; http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jacr.2016.07.008).
Dr. Duszak wrote a commentary about bundled-payment models and the future of physician reimbursement on the Neiman Institute's website. Additionally, a web-based inpatient bundled payment calculator tool is now available for use on the website.
